A year of great accomplishments for Jesús Ruiz ’12 at Tulane

Jesús Ruiz presented his paper (based on his MA thesis and research in Spain) “On Becoming Louverture” at the 61st annual conference of the Southeastern Council of Latin American studies (SECOLAS) in New Orleans and was awarded the “Edward H. Moseley Award” for Best Graduate Student Paper, which is eligible for publication in the SECOLAS Annals of “The Latin Americanist” – a peer-reviewed and multi-disciplinary journal supported by the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Winthrop University. After meeting and discussing his work at length with NYU Professor Ada Ferrer, she offered to cite his paper in her upcoming book.

Ruiz was also appointed Treasurer of the Stone Center for Latin American Studies’ Latin American Graduate Organization (LAGO) for the 2014-2015 Academic Year.  Moreover, he was awarded a Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Summer Grant by Tulane University through the U.S. Department of Education to partake in Florida International University’s prestigious Haitian Summer Institute for the study of Haitian Creole in Miami’s FIU Campus and an on-site study tour of Haiti.
