Masters of Arts in Humanities in Caribbean and Latin/o American Studies (CLAS)
A Multi-Sited Pre-Professional Program in Advanced Studies and Research

Our Promise to You

The Masters in Humanities in Caribbean and Latin/o American Studies program gives you an array of opportunities that cannot be matched by any other offering at the Masters level in the humanities and social sciences in the United States. You will graduate not only with a marketable skill set honed in the classroom, the field and the archives, but also with the life experience and the personal and professional connections forged by living, studying and working in Mexico and Spain.

Looking for a job right out of school? Keep in mind that working in the archives forces you to develop the organizational skills to sort, process, analyze and reinterpret vast amounts of information. These skills are highly sought after in a world where digital information grows at staggering rates. Given the rigor and focus of our program on developing research and analytical skills we guarantee that you will be noticed by potential employers.

Thinking of continuing towards a PhD? Your experience with us will place you far ahead of other graduates with Masters degrees in the Liberal Arts and Humanities. Of the hundreds of applications received by doctoral programs every year, how many people can claim to have been schooled in three different systems of graduate education and to have spent an entire semester doing archival research? If your ultimate objective is a PhD we guarantee that coming into our program will get you noticed in the Admissions Office. That is the first and most important step to getting acceptance. The rest is up to the professional contacts that you make while in our program and to the hard work you put into your assignments and your thesis.

Going through our Masters program will be also a qualitative leap and an investment that will determine your future success and possibilities in Academia. Coming with us will gain you entry into a better doctoral program than if you had applied instead, straight out of college, to a Masters program that transitions into a doctoral one. In the end it is all about your final degree: the more prestigious the university where you obtain your PhD the better job and the more appealing choices you will have as you launch your career.

We have the record to prove it. For a young and small program like ours we have already four alumni who are tenure-track professors and a number of recent graduates receiving full doctoral scholarships in the top programs at UT Austin, Tulane and the University of Frankfurt. One of our alumnus is currently dean of the Faculty of Arts and Letters at the University of Havana.

If your goal is not a PhD, know that we have graduates in medical school, working for the US Government, in non-governmental organizations and in Wall Street among other places. Without exception, all our graduates are gainfully employed. Click HERE to see what they have been doing lately!
