Masters of Arts in Humanities in Caribbean and Latin/o American Studies (CLAS)
A Multi-Sited Pre-Professional Program in Advanced Studies and Research
Welcome to the University of the Future
We believe that a trans-disciplinary approach is the best and only way to engage the rich complexity of profoundly multicultural and plurilingual regions such as the Caribbean, Latin America and the Atlantic and Latino worlds. To this end, our program exposes students to a variety of academic fields and their respective approaches to learning, critical thinking, research and design. These include, but are not limited to Anthropology, Archaeology, Architecture, Art History, Geography, History, Literature, Music, Philosophy, Political Science and Sociology. Moreover, during their third semester our students are thoroughly trained in the methods and techniques of Paleography and Archival Research. Exposure to multiple disciplines and research methods means that you will graduate with a diverse, widely applicable and uniquely marketable skill set.
There is no other graduate program in any US university that affords students the possibility of spending two full semesters of study and research abroad on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, living and learning in five major cities over a two-year span. We challenge you to look for a comparable graduate program in the Liberal Arts that gives its graduates competence in such varied areas while furnishing them with a concrete, practical and marketable set of professional skills. If this sounds like an offer you cannot refuse, consider that you get the full high quality package and priceless experience at the cost of a graduate education in a state institution. Moreover, if you qualify for in-State tuition, your two semesters abroad will cost almost the same as if you were going to school at home!
All in all we put before you the most rigorous, unique, and affordable program with a very marketable degree whether you are looking to pursue a PhD or planning to search for the best jobs in a globalized world. Compare us to the other top Caribbean and Latin American programs in Duke, NYU, Princeton, Stanford, Tulane, UCLA, the Teresa Lozano Long Institute at UT Austin, or Yale and you will see what we mean.
